Melianes: A Trendy Display Font That Adds Personality to Brand Designs

Choosing the Right Typeface for a Café Branding Project

I recently started working on a visual refresh for a small local café that wanted to shift from a generic coffeehouse vibe to something more playful and community-focused. The brand needed a modern typeface that could carry personality without sacrificing professionalism. That’s when I decided to test Melianes — a display font I’d seen in design portfolios but hadn’t yet used in a real-world project.

Opening the brand board in Figma, I dropped Melianes into the logo draft. Instantly, the font gave the wordmark a youthful, energetic feel. It’s a sans serif with a slight slant and rounded edges, which made it feel both approachable and stylish. I compared it with other display fonts I typically use, like Bebas Neue and Montserrat, but Melianes stood out for its unique balance of coolness and clarity.

Visual Style and Personality of Melianes

Melianes is best described as a contemporary display font with a soft, modern edge. It blends geometric structure with playful curves, giving it a friendly yet confident tone. The letterforms are open and airy, with slightly exaggerated details that catch the eye without overwhelming the design.

It’s not overly decorative like some script fonts, nor is it rigid like traditional sans serifs. Instead, Melianes lands somewhere in between — a versatile choice for branding that wants to feel creative and accessible. It carries a youthful, casual energy that works especially well for lifestyle brands, children’s products, editorial design, and boutique-style businesses.

Testing Melianes Across Brand Touchpoints

Once I was happy with the logo concept, I moved on to testing Melianes across other brand elements. I placed it on packaging mockups — specifically, a coffee sleeve and a custom tote bag design. The font scaled well on both digital and printed mockups, maintaining its character even at smaller sizes (though I wouldn’t recommend it for very tiny text).

In the brand board, I used Melianes for headers and accent phrases, pairing it with a clean sans serif like Lato for body copy. The contrast between the two typefaces created a strong visual hierarchy. On the website header mockup, Melianes added a punch of personality to the hero section, drawing attention without competing with the imagery.

For social media layouts, I used it on Instagram story templates and post headers. The rounded forms and light weight made it feel fresh and modern, fitting the café’s Instagram aesthetic perfectly. I also tested it on business cards — here, it performed well in short bursts like the owner’s name and tagline, but I avoided using it for addresses or long descriptions.

Where Melianes Shines — And Where It Falls Short

This font excels as a display font, particularly in logo design, poster layouts, book titles, and children’s book illustrations. Its personality makes it ideal for branding projects that aim to feel warm, creative, and a little offbeat. I’ve also found it works well in educational design — for example, in infographics or classroom posters where you want to keep the tone friendly but professional.

However, Melianes isn’t suited for long-form body text or formal corporate branding. At smaller sizes, some of its stylistic features — like the tapered terminals and rounded corners — can blur readability. It’s also not the best choice for legal documents, financial reports, or any project that requires a more traditional or conservative tone.

Font Pairing and Practical Usage Tips

One of the strengths of Melianes is how well it pairs with other fonts. For the café project, I combined it with a minimalist sans serif for body text and a subtle script for quotes and taglines. This trio gave the brand a layered, curated look without feeling chaotic.

If you're considering Melianes for your next design, here are a few practical tips:

Also, always double-check the licensing terms before using Melianes in commercial work. If you're creating a brand identity for a client or designing merchandise, templates, or print-on-demand products, make sure the font license allows for those specific uses.

Final Thoughts: A Display Font Worth Trying

After putting Melianes through the paces in a real branding project, I can confidently say it’s a display font that delivers both style and usability. It’s not just a trendy typeface — it’s one that can elevate a brand’s visual language when used thoughtfully.

Whether you’re working on a children’s book, a boutique packaging label, or a creative studio identity, Melianes brings a fresh, modern vibe that’s hard to replicate with more conventional fonts. As long as you understand its limitations and use it where it performs best, Melianes can be a valuable addition to your design toolkit.
